Head to Tripo Studio and sign up - Google, email, whatever's easiest. No credit card is needed, and the free Basic plan hands you roughly 200 credits a month (a standard generation costs ~25, so that's about eight models). That's genuinely enough to complete this entire tutorial and then some.

One thing worth knowing before you generate anything: free-plan models are public, and licensed CC BY 4.0 (non-commercial). For learning that's irrelevant; for client work later you'd need a paid plan, where models become private with commercial rights.

Take a 60-second tour of the workspace

You'll land in the 3D Workspace. Orient yourself around four zones before touching anything:

  • Left tool rail - the pipeline stages: Image, Model, Segment, Fill Parts, Retopo, Texture, Animate. You'll graduate through these over time.
  • Left panel - the controls for whichever tool is active (input fields, detail levels, action buttons).
  • Center viewport - your 3D preview: drag to rotate, scroll to zoom.
  • Right panel - Assets (your generated models) and Property (details of the selected one).

Also find the credit counter - knowing your remaining budget at a glance is the habit that separates calm beginners from surprised ones.

Choose your input mode

Tripo accepts four kinds of input. Pick based on what you already have:

  • Text to 3D - you have an idea, no reference. The mode this tutorial uses first.
  • Image to 3D - you have one decent photo (JPG/PNG/WEBP). Highest fidelity when the photo has a clean background, even lighting, and a three-quarter angle.
  • Multi-view - you have 2–4 angles of the same object; the far side of the model gets dramatically more accurate.
  • Sketch to 3D - you have a drawing with clear silhouettes.

Beginner default: start with Text to 3D for your first model - zero preparation - then try Image to 3D with a photo of something on your desk for the "wow" moment.

Write your first prompt (the right way)

Prompt like you'd brief a junior artist: object first, then style, then materials and distinguishing details - and one object per prompt. The generator makes a single coherent asset per run, so "a knight AND his horse AND a castle" forces it to butcher all three.

Weak: "a cool sword." Strong: the prompt above - it names the object (longsword), the style (medieval, ornate), the materials (gilded, leather, steel), and the wear ("slightly weathered"), which is what makes textures interesting.

Cheap trick: browse the community gallery first and note the phrasing on models you like - it calibrates your prompts faster than any guide.

Pick a model & settings

Before hitting generate, one dropdown matters - which underlying model runs the job:

  • v3.1 / H3.1 (default) - highest detail, best textures, up to ~500K polygons. Right for renders, printing, and most first models. Use this today.
  • Smart Mesh (P1.0) - clean low-poly, game-ready topology in ~2 seconds, 48–20K face budgets. The pick once you're feeding a game engine.
  • v3.0 Ultra / v2.5 - ultra-resolution geometry and the fast legacy option; ignore both for now.

Leave the other settings at defaults for your first run - defaults are tuned sensibly, and changing five dials at once teaches you nothing about which one mattered.

Generate, then evaluate like a pro

~1–3 min

Click generate. A preview appears in seconds to a couple of minutes depending on settings and queue. Now the beginner-separating habit: rotate the model fully before judging it. AI 3D's classic failures hide on the back side and in thin protruding parts - the front always looks great.

  • Shape wrong? Refine the prompt and regenerate - this is the cheap stage (~25 credits), so iterate here freely.
  • Shape right, details soft? Don't regenerate - that's fixable downstream with texturing, for less.
  • Almost right? Generate 2–3 variations and pick the best base before spending on any expensive pass.

The golden budgeting rule: iterate cheap, commit expensive. Spend the pricey operations (HD texture, segmentation ~80cr) exactly once - on the winner.

Refine: texture, segment, edit

~5–10 min

This is where Tripo out-runs single-shot generators. Three refinement tools, in the order a beginner should meet them:

AI Texturing. Apply PBR materials (they respond correctly to light), with an HD 4K option for hero pieces. The Magic Brush repaints a specific region - fix one mismatched patch without regenerating the whole texture.

Intelligent Segmentation. Split the model into parts (helmet, blade, grip…) - pick Simple, Balanced, or Detailed, then audit with the exploded view. Merge parts with Ctrl+Click → Merge, refine regions by picking a part's color and painting with the brush, and Save Changes when happy (earlier versions live in History). Auto-Rigging (characters only). Generates a skeleton with skin weights and T-pose export - skip it for props, remember it exists for creatures.

Click Export/Download and pick the format your destination expects:

  • GLB/GLTF - web, AR, general interchange (the safe default)
  • FBX / OBJ - Blender, Maya, game engines
  • STL / 3MF - 3D-printing slicers (give each piece a 10-second slicer preview before a long print)
  • USDZ - Apple AR

Understand your credits (so month two goes smoothly)

Beginner questions

Do I need 3D experience to use Tripo?
No - that's rather the point. The workflow is prompt → preview → refine → export, all in the browser. Where 3D knowledge helps is downstream (cleaning assets in Blender for production), but nothing in this tutorial requires it.
Is the free plan really enough to learn on?
Yes: ~200 credits ≈ 8 generations a month, plus the refinement tools in trial form. Learn on free, and upgrade only when the tool is saving you real time - our review's advice is "the week it first saves you an afternoon."
How long does a model take?
Seconds for Smart Mesh; typically well under a couple of minutes for high-detail v3.1 depending on settings and queue priority. Iteration is fast enough to try several prompts in one sitting.
Why does my model look great in front and weird behind?
Single-image and text generation must guess unseen surfaces. Rotate before judging, and when accuracy matters use multi-view input (2–4 angles) - the far side improves dramatically.
Can I sell what I make while learning?
Not from the free plan - outputs there are public, CC BY 4.0, non-commercial. Commercial rights and private models start at Professional ($19.9/mo). Practice free, ship paid.
What should my second project be?
Image to 3D with a photo of a real object on your desk (clean background!), then run Balanced segmentation on the result and pull one part into Blender via the bridge. That single exercise touches the whole pipeline.
